The condition underneath matters
Pebbledash can look reasonably sound from a distance while parts of it are loose, hollow or cracked. Putting a new render system over an unsound background does not fix the problem underneath.
If the existing finish is well bonded and suitable for the proposed system, it may sometimes be possible to prepare it and work over it. If it is failing, loose or unsuitable, some or all of it may need to be removed first.
What we look at
- Whether the existing pebbledash is firmly bonded
- Cracks, loose areas or signs of movement
- Paint or other coatings already on the surface
- The condition of the wall underneath where this can be established
- Details around windows, doors, rooflines and adjoining surfaces
- The requirements of the render system being used
Does all the pebbledash have to come off?
Not necessarily. It depends on the condition of the existing finish and what is found when the property is inspected.
Photographs can give us a useful first look, but they cannot show whether every part of an existing render is securely bonded. That is something we may need to check at the property before agreeing the preparation and giving you a fixed quotation.
